Economics of Satellite Internet
The fact is there are at least 9 million household left (in non fiber areas) that are potential satellite internet customers, but what are other overiding factors that are precluding this next wave of rapid customer acqusition for HughesNet and for any other satellite provider. Two things are paramount. One can be solved with effort, the other is a bit more complex. EDUCATION is the key to the next level of customer acquistion for satellite internet. This is solvable. The more dicey factor is (you guessed it) the present state of the US economy. For many average American they are having the chalenge of just keeping their lights on, let alone a three hundred dollar investment to get started and 59.00/monthly for service. A introspective question to ask is the economic benefit of providing these households with satellite internet. Many studies put it at a 300 billion annual economic benefit. Again it becomes a matter of education. While it seems a paradox, more programs and systems need to be developed to implement broadband internet into rural America. HughesNet is working on such programs.
